French luxury house Chanel has acquired Charvet, the historic Parisian shirtmaker founded in 1838, ending nearly 190 years of independent ownership.
The acquisition strengthens Chanel's long-term strategy of preserving exceptional French craftsmanship while expanding its presence in luxury menswear. Charvet will continue to operate independently from its historic Place Vendôme location, maintaining its identity, craftsmanship and long-standing customer relationships.
Founded in 1838, Charvet is widely regarded as the world's first dedicated shirtmaker and has built an international reputation for bespoke shirts, ties and accessories. The transaction follows a creative collaboration between Charvet and Chanel Creative Director Matthieu Blazy, whose debut Chanel collection featured custom-made Charvet shirts.
For Chanel, the acquisition reinforces a decades-long strategy of investing in specialist luxury maisons and artisanal craftsmanship. For Charvet, it provides long-term ownership while preserving the heritage and savoir-faire that have defined the business for almost two centuries.
